<strong>My self critique:</strong>
Could lead in with project failure, here and with RUP. Cockburn and McConnell say that most software projects fail: they are delivered late and over budget and importantly, fail to meet business needs. Agile methodologies address these failure modes, especially the failure to meet business needs, and late delivery.

I really want to synthesize some of the stuff from the other classes here, especially the business aspects. I want to talk about the kinds of business opportunites that agile opens up, from a product perspective, and from an enterprise perspective.

Methodology as a whole must be hard to study. What is it that you’re studying? . I would imagine that it would be difficult to compare one methodology vs another in a research setting because projects last so long, as well as the fact that among all the things that cause a project to succeed or fail, methodology is only one of them, and you could have unsuccessful projects even if the methodology gave benefits to the development process. What I would imagine is that one would study particular aspects, sub parts. Such as: what staff skill levels are necessary to run an effective agile process? What kinds of projects are suitable for agile processes? Can you do agile without collocation (virtual agile)? From a theory perspective, I’ve been thinking that there are a few theories that would be of use in researching the effectiveness or operation of agile methodologies. Media richness theory is an obvious choice since agile emphasizes constant face to face coordination or information radiator driven coordination over documentation, intermittent meetings, emails, phone calls. Adaptive structuration theory, structuration theory because of the iteration of the process to become what works best for the team. Sensemaking, also, for the same reason.
